Vung Tau Itinerary: How to Plan 1 to 3 Days

One day is enough to see Vung Tau’s main landmarks, but it does not leave time to relax on a beach or venture out to Ho Tram. If you have two or three days, you get both: the city’s colonial-era sights and a proper stretch of coast. Here is how to plan each version.

What Does One Day in Vung Tau Look Like?

A single day works well as a Ho Chi Minh City day trip: leave early, hit the landmarks in a loop around Small Mountain and Large Mountain, eat banh khot for lunch, and head back by early evening. If you would rather not self-drive or coordinate a hydrofoil plus taxis, a guided full-day Vung Tau tour from Ho Chi Minh City handles the whole loop, including lunch, for a fixed price.

TimeStopWhy
MorningBach Dinh (White Palace)A hilltop French-colonial villa with harbor views, easy first stop
MiddayBanh khot lunchVung Tau’s signature dish — mini savory pancakes, best eaten fresh off the pan
Early afternoonChrist the King statueClimb the interior stairs for a panoramic coastal view, best before the afternoon haze sets in
Late afternoonVung Tau Lighthouse + Ho May cable car areaTwo more hilltop viewpoints within a short drive of each other
EveningBai Truoc seafood dinnerFront Beach’s promenade has the highest concentration of seafood restaurants

TTC Verdict: If you only have one day, do the landmarks in the morning while it is cooler and the light is better for photos, and save the beach and seafood for the afternoon and evening. Trying to do it in reverse means fighting midday heat on the hill climbs.

What Should You Add With a Second Day?

A second day is best spent slower: sleep in, spend the morning at Ho May Park (the hilltop cable-car park with lake and garden areas), then dedicate the afternoon to Bai Sau, Vung Tau’s longer back beach, for actual swimming and lounging rather than sightseeing. This is also the day to fit in Long Hai or Nghinh Phong Cape if you want a quieter viewpoint than the main tourist stops.

Is a Third Day Worth Adding for Ho Tram?

Yes, if you want an actual resort stretch rather than a city beach. Ho Tram is about 45 minutes south of Vung Tau city by car and has a noticeably different pace: fewer day-trippers, longer stretches of open beach, and two international resort properties (see our where-to-stay guide for details). The simplest approach is to spend nights one and two in Vung Tau city and move to Ho Tram for the third night, checking out landmarks first and unwinding after.

What Should You Book Ahead?

Very little needs advance booking in Vung Tau itself — restaurants and the hilltop sights do not take reservations. The one exception is your Ho Tram hotel on a weekend, since both anchor resorts fill up with Saigon weekenders; book that a few weeks out if your trip lands on a Friday or Saturday night. If you are deciding between Vung Tau and another nearby beach town for this trip, our Vung Tau vs. Mui Ne comparison can help you pick.

Traveler Tip
Grab (the ride-hailing app) works reliably in Vung Tau city itself but coverage thins out toward Ho Tram. Arrange a hotel transfer or a private car for the Vung Tau-to-Ho Tram leg rather than counting on hailing a ride from the strip.
Is one day enough for Vung Tau?

It is enough to see the main landmarks — Bach Dinh, the Christ the King statue, and the lighthouse — but it does not leave real time for the beach. Budget two days if swimming and relaxing matter to your trip.

Can you do Vung Tau as a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, and many Saigon residents do exactly that on weekends. A hydrofoil there and back, or a full-day guided tour, both work comfortably within a single day.

How do you get from Vung Tau city to Ho Tram?

By private car or taxi, about 45 minutes down the coastal road. There is no reliable ride-hailing coverage once you are close to Ho Tram itself, so arrange the ride in advance.
