Things to Do in Chau Doc: Sam Mountain, the Floating Village, and the Cham Community
Chau Doc’s must-see list centers on Sam Mountain and its temple complex, a boat trip through the floating village, the Cham community across the river, and, for those with a third day, the Tra Su Cajuput Forest. None of it requires more than a short ride from town.
What Are the Must-See Sights?
Sam Mountain and the Ba Chua Xu Temple
Sam Mountain rises abruptly out of the flat delta on the edge of town, and its base holds the Ba Chua Xu Temple, one of southern Vietnam’s most-visited pilgrimage sites, along with several smaller temples and a war memorial. The summit gives a genuine panoramic view over the delta and, on a clear day, toward the Cambodian border.

The Floating Village and Fish-Cage Farms
A small boat trip through Chau Doc’s floating houses and the fish cages tethered beneath them is the town’s single most distinctive experience, best done at or shortly after sunrise when the river traffic is at its busiest.
The Cham Village of Chau Giang
Across the river, the Cham Muslim community of Chau Giang has its own mosque, the Jamiul Azhar, along with a distinct weaving and food tradition worth an afternoon on its own.

Is the Tra Su Cajuput Forest Worth the Trip?
The Tra Su Cajuput Forest, about 30 minutes from central Chau Doc, is a flooded melaleuca forest explored by small boat, most rewarding during the wetter months when water levels rise and bird activity increases. It is worth it if you have a third day or a genuine interest in the delta’s wetland ecology; skip it on a tight 2-day trip in favor of the town’s core sights. A verified full-day Tra Su Cajuput Forest tour from Ho Chi Minh City covers the logistics if you would rather not arrange transport yourself.
| Activity | Time Needed | Best Time of Day |
|---|---|---|
| Sam Mountain and Ba Chua Xu Temple | Half day | Morning or late afternoon |
| Floating village boat trip | 2 to 3 hours | Sunrise |
| Cham village of Chau Giang | Half day | Afternoon |
| Tra Su Cajuput Forest | Half day | Morning, wetter months especially |
Is Chau Doc Good for a Cambodia Border Crossing?
Yes. The daily express boat to Phnom Penh (see our Chau Doc travel guide for the full logistics) makes this one of the more relaxed border crossings in the region, and worth building your final Chau Doc day around if Cambodia is your next stop.
A sunrise boat trip through the floating village is the most distinctive experience Chau Doc offers, followed closely by Sam Mountain and the Ba Chua Xu Temple complex at its base.
The floating village boat trip and Sam Mountain both work well for families, though the Tra Su Cajuput Forest’s longer boat ride is better suited to older children with more patience for a slower-paced nature outing.
About 30 minutes by road. It is doable as a half-day add-on if you have a third day in Chau Doc, or can be booked as a guided full-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City if you are not basing yourself in Chau Doc at all.
