Chau Doc vs. Can Tho: Which Mekong Delta Town Should You Visit?

Can Tho is the Mekong Delta’s biggest, most-visited base, built around its famous floating markets. Chau Doc is smaller, closer to the Cambodian border, and built more visibly around actual river life, Sam Mountain, and its own Cham community. Most travelers with the time do both rather than choosing one.

TTC Verdict: Choose Can Tho if a big, active floating market and a wider choice of hotels matter most to you. Choose Chau Doc if you want a quieter, more distinctly local river town, or if crossing into Cambodia by boat is part of your plan. With 2.5 to 3 hours between them, doing both on one Mekong Delta loop is the better answer for most itineraries.

Which Is Easier to Get To?

Can Tho has its own international airport with limited routes and is a more common first stop from Ho Chi Minh City by bus, about 3 to 4 hours away. Chau Doc is farther, at 5 to 6 hours by direct bus from Ho Chi Minh City, though only 2.5 to 3 hours onward from Can Tho, which is why most itineraries treat Can Tho as the gateway and Chau Doc as the follow-on stop.

Which Has Better Hotels?

Can Tho has a wider range overall, including several properties with more amenities and choice at the upper end. Chau Doc’s selection is smaller but anchored by two genuine Victoria Hotels and Resorts properties, which is a stronger single hotel-brand presence than Chau Doc’s size would suggest. See our Chau Doc where-to-stay guide for specifics.

Which Has the Better Floating Market Experience?

Can Tho’s Cai Rang floating market is the larger, more famous, and more consistently active of the two, and is the better choice if a floating market is the main reason for visiting the Mekong Delta at all. Chau Doc’s river life is less concentrated into a single market scene and more spread across the floating houses and fish-cage farms themselves, which some travelers find more genuine, if less spectacular as a single photo opportunity.

Should You Visit Both?

If your schedule allows it, yes. The two towns are close enough, 2.5 to 3 hours apart, that pairing them into one Mekong Delta loop from Ho Chi Minh City covers both sides of the delta experience without adding a full extra travel day. See our Chau Doc itinerary and the existing Mekong Delta day-trip guide for how to sequence a loop that includes both.

Traveler Tip
If you can only pick one and a big floating market is the priority, choose Can Tho. If a quieter town, more visible river life, and the option to cross into Cambodia by boat matter more, choose Chau Doc.
Is Chau Doc or Can Tho better for a first Mekong Delta visit?

Can Tho is the more common first stop, since it has better transport connections and the region’s most famous floating market. Chau Doc works well as a second stop for travelers who want a quieter, more locally-rooted town, or who are continuing into Cambodia.

How far apart are Chau Doc and Can Tho?

About 2.5 to 3 hours by road and boat combined, close enough that most itineraries with 3 or more days in the Mekong Delta visit both rather than choosing just one.

Can you cross into Cambodia from Can Tho the way you can from Chau Doc?

No. Chau Doc has a direct daily express boat to Phnom Penh. Can Tho has no equivalent direct river crossing, so travelers continuing to Cambodia by boat need to route through Chau Doc.
