How to Estimate a Travel Budget

A realistic travel budget covers six categories: accommodation, flights, food, activities, local transportation, and a miscellaneous buffer for shopping, tips, and the unexpected. Start with the two big-ticket items — flights and accommodation — since those are usually the most stable numbers once booked. Then estimate daily spending on food, activities, and transportation based on your destination and travel style, and add a buffer of 10-15% of your total for miscellaneous costs.

Common Travel Expenses People Forget

Even careful planners miss a few line items. Before you finalize a budget, check that you have accounted for: travel insurance, visa fees, airport transfers on both ends of the trip, SIM cards or eSIMs, checked baggage fees, tipping norms at your destination, ATM and foreign transaction fees, and a small cushion for delays or missed connections.

How Much to Budget for Accommodation

Accommodation costs vary enormously by neighborhood and season, not just star rating. In Vietnam, for example, a clean, well-located 3-star hotel typically runs $25 to $50 USD per night, while a boutique or 4-star property lands closer to $60 to $130. Booking a specific neighborhood matters as much as the hotel itself — see our neighborhood guides for where to stay and where to avoid.

How Much to Budget for Food

Street food and local restaurants keep daily food costs low across most of Southeast Asia, while Western-style restaurants and hotel dining push the number up quickly. Budgeting separately for a couple of “nicer” meals per week, on top of your everyday street food and casual restaurant spending, tends to produce a more realistic total than averaging everything together.

Tours, Activities, and Transportation

Group day tours are usually the most cost-efficient way to see multi-stop attractions like Ha Long Bay or the Cu Chi Tunnels, while private drivers and guides cost more but save time. Local transportation — taxis, ride-hailing apps, and city buses — is typically inexpensive but adds up over a longer trip, so it is worth budgeting daily rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Emergency and Miscellaneous Spending

A miscellaneous buffer covers shopping, souvenirs, tipping, and the inevitable small surprises — a forgotten charger, a rescheduled activity, an extra checked bag. Building this into your budget from the start, rather than treating it as overspending later, makes the whole trip easier to plan around.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculator convert currencies?
No. Selecting USD, CAD, or AUD only changes the currency symbol shown next to your numbers — it does not perform live currency conversion. Enter your costs in whichever currency you actually plan to spend.
Can I use this for any destination?
Yes. The calculator works entirely from the numbers you enter, so it works for any trip, anywhere — it does not use destination-specific pricing data.
How is “cost per person” calculated?
Every field represents the total cost for your whole group (not per person). The calculator divides your total trip cost by the number of travelers to get cost per person.
How are accommodation nights calculated?
Accommodation is calculated as (trip length in days minus one) night, since a 7-day trip typically means 6 hotel nights. Food, activities, and transportation are calculated per full day, including the last day.
