How Trip Length Affects Your Planning
Trip length shapes almost every other decision, from how many destinations to fit in an itinerary to how much luggage makes sense. A long weekend of three or four days works best focused on a single city or region, while a full week or more opens up room for a multi-stop itinerary, like pairing Hanoi with Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh.
How Many Destinations Fit in One Trip
A common rule of thumb for Southeast Asia is to budget at least three full days per destination once travel time between stops is factored in — fewer than that and a trip starts to feel rushed. For a first visit to Vietnam, most travelers find that seven to ten days is enough to comfortably cover two or three regions without feeling like they are constantly packing and unpacking.
Accounting for Jet Lag and Arrival Day
Long-haul travelers from North America or Australia typically lose most of their arrival day to the flight and time zone change, so it rarely counts as a full sightseeing day. Building a lighter first day into the itinerary — and a similarly light day after a long flight home — tends to make the whole trip feel less rushed.
