Vung Tau Travel Guide: Everything to Know Before You Go

Vung Tau is the beach escape most Ho Chi Minh City residents grew up visiting, and it works just as well for a traveler passing through Saigon with a day or two to spare. The city sits on a small peninsula roughly two hours south of HCMC by road, with a French-colonial core, a working oil-industry port, and two distinct stretches of coast: the built-up city beaches, and the quieter, higher-end Ho Tram strip about 45 minutes further south. This guide covers both.

What Is Vung Tau, and Why Do People Go?

Vung Tau began as the French colonial port of Cap Saint Jacques and later grew into Vietnam’s offshore oil-and-gas hub. Today it functions mainly as Ho Chi Minh City’s default weekend beach trip: a place to eat seafood, walk a beachfront promenade, and climb a hill or two, without the flight or long drive a place like Phu Quoc or Da Nang requires.

One genuinely useful fact for planning: Ba Ria-Vung Tau province was folded into an expanded Ho Chi Minh City effective July 1, 2025, as part of Vietnam’s nationwide consolidation from 63 provinces down to 34. Vung Tau is technically no longer its own province as a result, though almost everyone, including most maps, hotels, and booking sites, still refers to the area by its old provincial name. on the exact current administrative designation (ward or district name) if you need it for anything official — the practical, on-the-ground experience of visiting has not changed.

How Do You Get to Vung Tau from Ho Chi Minh City?

Three options cover almost everyone: a hydrofoil from Saigon’s Bach Dang wharf (about 1.5 hours, the most scenic and traffic-proof option), a private car or Grab via the coastal highway (roughly 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic), or a public bus from Mien Dong station (about 2.5 to 3 hours, the cheapest). on the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau expressway’s current completion status — it could shorten the drive meaningfully once fully open.

OptionTimeCost (approx.)Best For
Hydrofoil (Saigon → Vung Tau)~1.5 hrs$12–$18 USD one-wayNo traffic, a scenic river-to-sea approach
Private car / Grab~2–2.5 hrs$35–$55 USD one-wayFlexibility, luggage, groups, continuing to Ho Tram
Public bus (Mien Dong station)~2.5–3 hrs$5–$8 USDBudget travelers with more time than money

TTC Verdict: Vung Tau rewards an overnight stay more than a rushed day trip. Come midweek if you can — weekends bring a wave of day-trippers from Saigon that clog the beach roads and push up hotel rates.

How Many Days Do You Need in Vung Tau?

One full day comfortably covers the city’s main landmarks — the Christ the King statue, Bach Dinh, and the lighthouse. Two to three days let you add a slower pace and a stay out at Ho Tram. Our Vung Tau itinerary breaks down exactly how to spend 1, 2, or 3 days, and if you are choosing between Vung Tau and another Saigon-adjacent beach town, our Vung Tau vs. Mui Ne comparison lays out the tradeoffs.

Where Should You Stay: the City or Ho Tram?

The city beaches (Bai Truoc and Bai Sau) are walkable, more affordable, and put you closest to the landmarks — Pullman Vung Tau is the strongest branded option right on Bai Sau. Ho Tram, about 45 minutes further south, is quieter and resort-style, anchored by two genuine international properties: Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort, a 5-star beachfront property, and IXORA Ho Tram by Fusion, a wellness-focused all-inclusive resort. Our full where-to-stay guide compares all three areas in detail.

Traveler Tip
Vung Tau’s beaches are calmest and safest for swimming from roughly November through April. Outside that window, afternoon chop and the occasional undertow at Bai Sau are worth respecting — swim near the flagged, lifeguarded sections when in doubt.
Is Vung Tau worth visiting?

Yes, especially as a 1-to-3-day add-on to a Ho Chi Minh City trip. It will not out-beach Phu Quoc or Con Dao, but it is the easiest, cheapest beach escape from Saigon, with genuine colonial-era landmarks and a real local food scene rather than a purely resort-built one.

How far is Vung Tau from Ho Chi Minh City?

About 95 to 125 km depending on the route, which works out to roughly 1.5 hours by hydrofoil or 2 to 2.5 hours by car or bus, traffic depending.

Is Ho Tram the same as Vung Tau?

Not exactly. Ho Tram is a separate beach strip about 45 minutes south of Vung Tau city, home to the area’s international resort brands. Most travelers group the two together when planning, since they are commonly combined into one trip.
