Buon Ma Thuot Itinerary: 2–3 Days in Vietnam’s Coffee Capital

Two days covers the essentials of Buon Ma Thuot: the city sights, a coffee experience, and a day trip into the surrounding countryside. Three days lets you add Lak Lake or go deeper into Yok Don National Park without rushing. This itinerary assumes you are flying into Buon Ma Thuot Airport and either self-driving a rented motorbike or booking a car and driver for the out-of-town legs, which is the more practical choice for most visitors booking a guided Dray Nur Waterfall & Buon Don day trip.

How Should You Structure a Buon Ma Thuot Itinerary?

Split your time between the city itself, which covers coffee culture and heritage sites within a short motorbike or taxi ride, and the countryside, where Ban Don, Yok Don National Park, and the areas waterfalls require a half-day to full-day trip each. Most travelers base themselves in Buon Ma Thuot city the whole time rather than moving lodging, since the farthest attraction (Lak Lake) is still a manageable day trip.

DayMorningAfternoonEvening
Day 1Dak Lak Museum and the old Bao Dai groundsKhai Doan Pagoda, then a coffee tasting or the World Coffee MuseumAko Dhong Ede village at golden hour, dinner of bun do in the city center
Day 2Drive to Ban Don for an elephant-friendly experience (feeding and bathing, not riding) and a walk through Yok Don National ParkDray Nur Waterfall on the way back to the cityFree evening in Buon Ma Thuot, try a local coffee shop for cold-brew-style Vietnamese coffee
Day 3 (optional)Drive to Lak Lake for a boat trip on the waterM-nong stilt-house village visit near the lakeReturn to Buon Ma Thuot city or continue on to your next destination

TTC Verdict: Two days is enough to say you have seen Buon Ma Thuot, but three lets the trip breathe — the extra day at Lak Lake is where the highlands stop feeling like a checklist and start feeling like a place. If you only have two days, prioritize Ban Don/Yok Don over Lak Lake; the national park and waterfall combination is the more distinctive experience.

Day 1: City, Coffee, and Ede Culture

Start at the Dak Lak Museum, built partly on the grounds of Bao Dais former hunting lodge, for context on the provinces 40-plus ethnic groups before you see any of it firsthand. Khai Doan Pagoda, the largest Buddhist temple in the city with Hue-influenced architecture, is a short ride away. Spend the afternoon on coffee: either a working farm tour or the more accessible Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, a free-entry park built around coffee culture with small waterfalls and traditional stilt houses. In the evening, walk through Ako Dhong, an Ede village just two kilometers from the city center with traditional longhouses still in use, then find a bowl of bun do — the citys signature red noodle soup — for dinner.

Day 2: Ban Don, Yok Don National Park, and Dray Nur Waterfall

This is the day that requires the most driving, so start early. Ban Don is the areas best-known elephant tourism site; as of 2023 the main center there ended elephant riding in favor of an elephant-friendly model — feeding, bathing, and photography — as part of a province-wide welfare shift, and that is the version worth booking. From Ban Don, Yok Don National Park, Vietnams largest national park, offers walking trails through dry dipterocarp forest that looks unlike anywhere else in the country. On the way back toward the city, stop at Dray Nur Waterfall, one of the widest waterfalls in Vietnam at over 250 meters, with pools safe for wading in the dry season.

Traveler Tip
Book the Ban Don and Yok Don leg as a guided day tour rather than self-driving if it is your first time in the area — the roads are manageable but the sites are spread out, and a driver who already knows the elephant-friendly operators saves you from accidentally booking a riding-based one — we like this guided Dray Nur Waterfall & Buon Don day trip, which bundles transport and lunch so you are not coordinating logistics yourself.

Day 3 (Optional): Lak Lake

Lak Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the Central Highlands, roughly in the 50 km range from Buon Ma Thuot city (sources vary on the exact distance), ringed by M-nong stilt-house villages that still offer homestays and boat trips. It is a slower, quieter day than Day 2, better suited to travelers who want to add rather than rush. If your schedule only allows two days, skip this and treat it as a reason to come back.

Can you do Buon Ma Thuot as a day trip?

Not comfortably. The city sights alone take a half day, and the countryside attractions — Ban Don, Yok Don, and the waterfalls — need a half to full day on their own. Two days is the realistic minimum.

Do you need a guide for Yok Don National Park?

A guide is not strictly required for the accessible trails near the entrance, but a guide or driver familiar with the park makes the Ban Don and Yok Don combination far more efficient in a single day, since the sites are spread across a large area.

Is three days too much time in Buon Ma Thuot?

Not if you add Lak Lake or want to go deeper into coffee farm visits. For travelers who only want the highlights, two days is enough; a third day is for those who want to slow down rather than see something new.
