14 Days in Vietnam: The Complete Two-Week Itinerary
Fourteen days is the point where a Vietnam trip stops feeling rushed. It’s enough time to cover the same north-to-south route as our 10-day itinerary at a genuinely relaxed pace, and still have room for two additions most shorter trips skip: an overnight in Ninh Binh’s karst-and-rice-paddy countryside, and a proper Mekong Delta day trip out of Ho Chi Minh City instead of a rushed half-day.
Is 14 Days Enough for Vietnam?
Yes — 14 days is enough to see all three regions of Vietnam without the back-to-back travel days that make a 7 or 10-day trip feel like a checklist. It’s the right length if you want breathing room in the morning, an extra day to recover from jet lag in Hanoi, and time for at least one destination beyond the standard first-timer route. If you have less time, see our 7-day and 10-day itineraries instead — both cover the essentials with a tighter schedule.
| Duration | Best For | What You Cover | Pace |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Days | First-timers with limited vacation time | Hanoi + Ha Long Bay, Da Nang + Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City | Fast — one region per feel, no rest days |
| 10 Days | Most first-time travelers | Adds Nha Trang beach time to the 7-day route | Comfortable, still tightly scheduled |
| 14 Days | Travelers who want breathing room | Adds a Ninh Binh overnight and a Mekong Delta day trip | Relaxed — no back-to-back travel days |
| Region | Stops | Nights | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | Hanoi + Ha Long Bay | 4 | Overnight cruise on nights 3–4 |
| North (add-on) | Ninh Binh | 2 | 1.5–2 hr drive or train from Hanoi |
| Central | Da Nang + Hoi An | 3 | Flight from Hanoi |
| Central Coast | Nha Trang | 2 | Flight from Da Nang |
| South | Ho Chi Minh City + Mekong Delta day trip | 3 | Flight from Nha Trang |
TTC Verdict: 14 days is the sweet spot between rushing and having so much unstructured time that you run out of things worth doing on a first Vietnam trip. Book the 3 domestic flights (Hanoi–Da Nang, Da Nang–Nha Trang, Nha Trang–Ho Chi Minh City) as one connected search rather than separately, and don’t schedule anything for your first morning in Hanoi — landing jet-lagged and going straight into a packed Day 1 is the most common way this itinerary starts to feel rushed instead of relaxed.

Why Add Ninh Binh and the Mekong Delta Specifically?
Both are the two additions that fit most naturally into the extra 4 days a 14-day trip has over a 10-day one, and both are also the top two candidates on our own Ninh Binh day-trip guide. Ninh Binh is a 1.5–2 hour detour from Hanoi that fits before or after the Ha Long Bay leg, and rounds out the north with a completely different kind of scenery — karst towers rising from rice paddies instead of the sea. You can book a full-day tour covering Hoa Lu, a Trang An or Tam Coc boat ride, and Hang Mua ahead of time through Klook, departing directly from Hanoi. The Mekong Delta, similarly, turns a single overcrowded half-day tour out of Ho Chi Minh City into an actual day, with time to see a floating market and canal life without the itinerary anxiety of a 6am group-tour pickup. A day trip like this one on GetYourGuide covers the Mekong Delta at a similarly unrushed pace.
Should I Add Ninh Binh or the Mekong Delta If I Can’t Fit Both?
If you have to pick one, match it to what the rest of your itinerary is missing. Choose Ninh Binh if your trip is light on scenery and outdoor activity — it adds karst landscapes, cycling, and boat trips that nothing else in a standard north-to-south route covers. Choose the Mekong Delta if you’re already ending in Ho Chi Minh City and want a change of pace from cities before flying home — it’s a slower, rural contrast to the trip’s final days. Either one is a stronger use of an extra day or two than simply adding more nights to a city you’ve already covered.
Yes. 14 days covers all three regions of Vietnam — north, central, and south — at a relaxed pace, with room for one addition beyond the standard first-timer route, like a Ninh Binh overnight or a full Mekong Delta day trip.
A north-to-south route works best: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay (4 nights), Ninh Binh (2 nights), Da Nang and Hoi An (3 nights), Nha Trang (2 nights), and Ho Chi Minh City with a Mekong Delta day trip (3 nights), connected by 3 domestic flights.
This itinerary has room for both, but if you need to cut one, match it to what’s missing elsewhere in your trip: Ninh Binh adds outdoor scenery and boat trips, while the Mekong Delta adds a slower, rural change of pace before flying home from Ho Chi Minh City.
