Chau Doc Itinerary: How to Plan 2 to 3 Days

Two days is enough to see Chau Doc’s essentials: Sam Mountain, the Ba Chua Xu Temple, the Cham village, and a boat ride through the floating houses. Three days adds breathing room for the Tra Su Cajuput Forest or a slower pace, which this river town rewards more than a rushed checklist does.

Day 1: Sam Mountain, the Temple, and the Cham Village

Morning: Ba Chua Xu Temple and Sam Mountain

Start at the Ba Chua Xu Temple at the base of Sam Mountain, one of southern Vietnam’s most-visited pilgrimage sites, then continue up the mountain itself for panoramic views over the flat delta and, on a clear day, into Cambodia. The complex includes several other temples and a war memorial worth a slower look if you have the time.

Afternoon: The Cham Village of Chau Giang

Cross the river to Chau Giang, home to one of the Mekong Delta’s Cham Muslim communities, and visit the Jamiul Azhar Mosque. The area has its own weaving and food traditions distinct from the rest of the town, including tung lo mo, a Cham-style cured beef sausage worth seeking out at a local stall.

Evening: Riverside Dinner

Chau Doc’s riverside restaurants are the easiest way to end the day, many with open-air seating looking straight onto the water traffic. See our Chau Doc food guide for exactly what to order.

Day 2: The Floating Houses and River Life

Morning: Boat Trip Through the Floating Village

Hire a small boat at sunrise to move through Chau Doc’s floating houses and fish-cage farms while the river is at its busiest and coolest. This is the single most distinctive experience Chau Doc offers and is worth prioritizing over a lie-in.

Afternoon: Tra Su Cajuput Forest (Optional Half Day)

The Tra Su Cajuput Forest, about 30 minutes from town, is a flooded melaleuca forest reachable by small boat, best visited in the wetter months when water levels are higher and bird activity picks up. A verified full-day Tra Su Cajuput Forest tour from Ho Chi Minh City is also available if you would rather book it as a guided add-on than arrange transport yourself. A local Klook search for Tra Su Forest tours also turns up half-day options departing directly from Chau Doc.

Should You Combine Chau Doc With Can Tho?

Most itineraries pair the two, since they sit only 2.5 to 3 hours apart by road and boat, and each covers a genuinely different side of the Mekong Delta. See our Chau Doc vs. Can Tho comparison to help decide how much time to give each.

What Should You Book Ahead?

A river-view or riverside room at one of Chau Doc’s two Victoria properties is worth booking in advance during peak season (see our where-to-stay guide), and the Phnom Penh boat ticket should be reserved at least a day or two ahead if you are continuing on to Cambodia Current booking lead time..

Traveler Tip
Sunrise and early morning are when the floating village is at its most alive, with boats moving fish feed, produce, and people between houses. An afternoon visit still shows the houses themselves but misses most of the actual river traffic.
Is 2 days enough for Chau Doc?

Yes, for most travelers. Two days covers Sam Mountain, the Ba Chua Xu Temple, the Cham village, and a floating-house boat trip. Add a third day only if you want to include the Tra Su Cajuput Forest or prefer a slower pace.

What is the best time of day for the floating village?

Early morning, ideally at or just after sunrise, when the river is busiest with boats moving between houses and the light and temperature are both at their best.

Can you visit Chau Doc as a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

It is possible but not recommended. The drive alone is 5 to 6 hours each way, leaving almost no real time in Chau Doc itself. An overnight stay is a far better use of the same travel time.
