7 Days in Vietnam: The Perfect First-Timer Itinerary

Seven days is enough to see Vietnam north to south without it becoming a series of airports: two to three days in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in the north, two to three in Da Nang (with an easy add-on to Hoi An), and two in Ho Chi Minh City in the south. It is a fast pace, but a realistic one for a first trip on a one-week budget. Here is exactly how to route it.

Is 7 Days Enough to See Vietnam?

Seven days covers one city in each of Vietnam’s three regions — north, central, south — which is the honest minimum for a first trip that touches the whole country rather than just one region. It moves fast: expect two internal flights and roughly 2 to 3 nights per stop. If that pace sounds too rushed, our 10-day Vietnam itinerary covers the same route with more breathing room and an extra stop.

Trip LengthWhat You CoverPace
7 DaysHanoi + Ha Long Bay, Da Nang + Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh CityFast — 2 internal flights, minimal downtime
10 Days (recommended)Everything in 7 days, plus Nha Trang and more time in each stopComfortable — a rest day built in
14 DaysEverything in 10 days, plus Hue or a slower Mekong Delta extensionRelaxed — the version most seasoned travelers actually take

TTC Verdict: Take 7 days only if it is genuinely all the time you have. If you can stretch to 10, do it — the extra 3 days turn this from a checklist trip into one with actual downtime, for one added flight leg at most.

Days 1–3: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay

Fly into Hanoi and spend your first full day in the Old Quarter and around Hoan Kiem Lake. On day 2, cover the rest of Hanoi’s major sights — see our full Hanoi things to do guide — before an early departure on day 3 for Ha Long Bay, roughly 2.5 hours from the city. A day cruise or one-night overnight boat both work on this timeline; the overnight adds a sunrise on the water but means less time in Hanoi itself. For where to base yourself in the city, see our Hanoi where to stay guide, and for food, our Hanoi food guide.

Days 4–5: Da Nang and Hoi An

Fly from Hanoi to Da Nang on day 4 — a short domestic flight — and settle in near My Khe Beach. Use our full 2-day Da Nang itinerary as your base for these two days: the Marble Mountains, the Dragon Bridge, and a full day at Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge (book the cable car and entry ticket through Klook ahead of time to skip the line). Hoi An’s Ancient Town sits about 30 minutes south of Da Nang and is easy to fold into either day as a half-day add-on if you want lantern-lit streets and tailor shops instead of a second beach day — a dedicated Hoi An guide is coming soon.

How the 7 Days Split by Region
Hanoi + Ha Long Bay (North)3 nights
Da Nang + Hoi An (Central)2 nights
Ho Chi Minh City (South)2 nights
Nights per stop, this itinerary
Han River Bridge in central Da Nang
Beachfront bar along the coast in Da Nang

Days 6–7: Ho Chi Minh City

Fly from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City on day 6 and spend the afternoon on the District 1 landmarks — Notre-Dame Basilica exterior, Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market. On day 7, either add a half-day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels — this one on Klook includes hotel pickup — before your evening flight home, or spend the morning at the War Remnants Museum instead. Our full 3-day Ho Chi Minh City itinerary covers both options in more detail if you can stretch this leg by a day.

Traveler Tip
Book domestic flights (Hanoi–Da Nang, Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City) as early as you can — on a 7-day trip, a delayed or rescheduled flight eats directly into the only 2 to 3 nights you have in that region, with no slack to absorb it. Use our trip length calculator if you are weighing this route against a longer version.
Is 7 days enough for Vietnam?

It is enough to visit one city in each of Vietnam’s three regions — Hanoi in the north, Da Nang in central Vietnam, and Ho Chi Minh City in the south — at a fast pace with two internal flights. It is not enough to see the country slowly or add extra stops; for that, look at a 10 or 14-day version instead.

What is the best 7-day Vietnam route for a first trip?

North to south: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay (3 nights), Da Nang and Hoi An (2 nights), Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights). This covers the country’s three regions with the fewest backtracking flights.

Should I fly or take the train between cities in Vietnam?

On a 7-day trip, fly — domestic flights between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City take 1.5 to 2 hours versus 15 to 20+ hours by train. Trains are a genuinely good option on a longer, slower trip, just not on a one-week timeline.
